ABOUT KUNSAN AFB

Kunsan AFB is one of the two major installations in Korea maintained by the United States air force. Often called the last of the warrior bases, Kunsan AFB is a remote assignment that can test the endurance levels of the most resilient service members. The 8 th Fighter Wing or 'The wolfpack' is the host unit at Kunsan and it is assigned to the 38 th Fighter Group (Korean Air Force) and the 7 th Air Force of the Pacific Air Forces.

Kunsan was originally under Japanese command, being used as a base for fighter interceptor aircraft. The base was subsequently taken over by the United States and used even as early as in 1945 occasionally. During the Korean War, the lack of the presence of a strong US air force at the base led to its capture by enemy forces. After the 24 th Infantry Division reclaimed the base in 1950, the need for assigning a permanent unit here was acknowledged and the 27 th Fighter Escort Wing assigned to Kunsan in 1951.
