A BRIEF HISTORY OF RAMSTEIN AIR BASE, GERMANY
The history of Ramstein Air Base can be traced back to the post 2nd World War period and the Truman Doctrine. The Landstuhl Air Base and the Ramstein Air Station were laid down between 1949 and 1952. More than 270,000 Europeans worked on the construction site.
In 1957, the two bases were combined and the new base was renamed as the Ramstein-Landstuhl Air Base. It was finally renamed as the Ramstein Air Base in 1958.
Ramstein Air Base was the site of an air show disaster in August 1988, involving the Italian Air Force.
There were 300,000 spectators watching the air show when the disaster occurred. 10 Aermacchi MB-339 planes from the Italian Air Display Team were conducting air acrobatics when there was a mid air collision. The resulting fire ball and debris caused the death of 67 spectators and three Air force pilots. More than 346 spectators were seriously injured and many more suffered minor injuries.
PRESENT DAY RAMSTEIN, AIR BASE
Ramstein Air Force Base is the headquarters of the US Air Force in Europe (USAFE). It is also an installation of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). The base hosts the Allied Air Command Ramstein, which is a unit of the Allied Joint Force Command of the NATO.
Ramstein Air Force Base is home to the 86th Air Lift Wing, the 435th Air Ground Operations Wing and 521st Air Mobility Operations Wing. The 86th Air Wing is tasked with operating and maintaining C-40B, C-21s, C-20s, C-130Js and C-37A aircraft that are used for providing airlift throughout Europe, Middle East and Africa.
