A BRIEF HISTORY OF WHITMAN AFB
Whitman AFB was activated in 1942, during the 2 nd World War as the Sedalia Glider Base. Later that year, it came to be called as the Sedalia Army Air Field and it was given over to the 12 th Troop Carrier Command (Army Air Force). The air field was used to train paratroopers and pilots on gilder tactics.
In 1951, the air field was made a part of the Strategic Air Command. The SAC created the 4224 th Air Base Squadron and a new base was constructed on the land, called the Sedalia AFB. In 1952, the 4224 th was inactivated and the base was turned over to the 340 th Bombardment Wing.
The air base was renamed as the Whitman Air Force Base in 1955, after Lt. George A. Whitman, a Sedalia native and the first U.S fighter pilot to die in aerial combat, during the attack on Pearl Harbor.
The first B-2 bomber touched down at Whitman AFB in 1993.
PRESENT DAY WHITMAN AFB
Whitman AFB is home to the 509 th Bomb Wing, a critical component of the Air Force Global Strike Command. The 509 th Air Wing operates 19 B-2 Spirit Bombers. The other units here are the 131 st Bomb Wing (Missouri Air National Guard), the 442 nd Fighter Wing (Air Force Reserve Command), the 1/135 th Aviation Battalion (Missouri Army National Guard), the Mobile Inshore Undersea Warfare Unit 114 (U.S Navy Reserve) and others.
