Naval Base San Diego was originally a half submerged marshland near the hills of Balboa Park. The Navy acquired custody of the location in 1921 and it was established as the U.S Destroyer base. As the base expanded heavily during the World War II, the Navy also added a fleet training school here. However, it was much later, in the 1990’s that it was made the principal homeport of the U.S. Pacific Fleet following the closure of the Navy’s Long Beach Shipyard.
