BRIEF HISTORY OF NAVAL BASE SAN DIEGO

Naval Base San Diego was originally a half submerged marshland near the hills of Balboa Park. The Navy acquired custody of the location in 1921 and it was established as the U.S Destroyer base. As the base expanded heavily during the World War II, the Navy also added a fleet training school here. However, it was much later, in the 1990’s that it was made the principal homeport of the U.S. Pacific Fleet following the closure of the Navy’s Long Beach Shipyard. Today, Naval Base San Diego stands as a state- of- art base that is highly technologically advanced.

PRESENT DAY NAVAL BASE SAN DIEGO

Naval Base San Diego enjoys the distinction of being the largest United States Navy base on the west coast. This base is also all set to host the Navy's most advanced Littoral Combat Ships, the 21 st century fleet platform with immense capabilities. This base is responsible for the headquarters of the Commander, Navy Region Southwest as well as the Naval Medical Center, Balboa Park. Home to over 200 tenant commands and support facilities, the base is a critical cog in the Navy's defense machinery. Major shore commands here include the naval dental center, Naval legal services office, fleet training center, Southwest Region maintenance Command, Naval education and Training Support Center, NCIS and Naval Electronic Systems Engineering Center.

Recently the base participated in the Sexual Assault Prevention and Response (SAPR) stand down. In line with the increased focus on prevention and redressal of sexual assault incidents in army establishments, Naval Base San Diego is committed to taking a very serious view of any such complaints against its servicemen and women. While this is commendable, it also necessitates a complete understanding of their legal rights on part of the service personnel stationed here. With the help of a competent Naval Base San Diego Military Criminal Defense Attorney, personnel at this base can defend their rights when charges are brought against them.
